Cambrai: The First Great Tank Offensive
To mark the release of my new book, Cambrai: The First Great Tank Offensive, the first volume in the Famous Tank Battles series, this article looks back at the battle that helped reveal the future of mechanized warfare. Fought in November Nineteen Seventeen, Cambrai was not simply a dramatic debut for the tank on a large scale. It was a battlefield experiment in surprise, coordination, technology, and adaptation, where British Mark IV tanks helped crack the Hindenburg Line but could not, by themselves, turn breakthrough into victory. Its lessons still matter because Cambrai showed both the promise of armored warfare and the hard truth that no machine wins a battle alone.
