The Pentagon is dedicated

While frontline units fought across oceans, the War Department was attempting to manage a truly global conflict from Washington. On January 15th, 1943, officials dedicated the Pentagon, a vast five–sided building designed to bring scattered offices under one roof. The new headquarters gave Army leadership a centralized nerve center for planning, logistics, and personnel management, replacing a confusing patchwork of leased buildings scattered around the capital. Its corridors and rings quickly filled with officers, clerks, and civilian experts working around the clock to move men and materiel to every theater. The Pentagon’s opening symbolized the rise of large–scale, bureaucratic staff systems as an essential part of modern warfare. Long after the war, the building would remain a physical symbol of the nation’s defense establishment and the permanent responsibilities that came with global commitments.
