At New Madrid, Mo., remained on duty though severely wounded. While procuring ammunition from the supply train at Stone River, Tenn., was captured, but made his escape, secured the ammunition, and in less than an hour from the time of his capture had the batteries supplied.

Current Society identity expands Joseph L. Follett to Joseph Leonard Follett. The Society structured date lists December 31, 1862, but its citation and the Army index establish two actions—New Madrid on March 3 and Stone River on December 31. One canonical award retains both actions; no duplicate award was created.
