This is not the kind of battle the New Mexico-class was designed for. These ships were conceived in another era, to fight a gunnery duel in long lines over a gray horizon. Yet in places like Lingayen, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa, they would be asked to stand in close, take punishment meant for fragile transports and landing craft, and prove that a battleship built before the First World War could still matter in the last, brutal campaigns of the Second.
The Problem It Was Built To Solve
To understand why the New Mexico-class existed at all, you have to wind back three decades from Lingayen’s kamikaze skies to the cool, methodical world of pre–World War I naval planners. The United States Navy was transforming itself from a coastal defense force into a blue-water fleet with global obligations, and its standard byword was “line of battle.” Battleships were not individual gladiators; they were bricks in a wall of steel and gunfire that had to steam, turn, and shoot as one.
Earlier dreadnoughts in American service carried powerful guns and thick armor, but they were a compromise born in the rush of a naval arms race. Coal-fired boilers limited their range and fouled their internals with ash. Secondary batteries were scattered along the hull in positions that flooded easily and were hard to work in heavy seas. Fire control—the art and science of getting shells to land where they were meant to at long range—was improving so quickly that yesterday’s solutions felt obsolete before the paint dried.
The emerging problem was clear: the Navy needed battleships that could keep a steady twenty-one-knot pace with the battle line, hit hard at long ranges, survive punishment through concentrated armor, and operate efficiently across the vast spaces of the Pacific. They had to burn oil instead of coal, carry modern fire control, and mount main batteries that could throw heavier shells farther than before, without sacrificing the ability to put many shells in the air at once.
The New Mexico-class was the next step in what became known as the “standard-type” battleships: a family of ships designed to share speed, turning radius, and general layout so they could fight together as a single, well-handled unit. Naval architects were asked to take the strengths of earlier classes and correct their bad habits, all within the limits of dock sizes, treaty politics still to come, and the realities of American shipyards. The decision to proceed with the New Mexico design was a choice to refine, rather than reinvent, the American battleship—an incremental answer to a strategic question that everyone in the Navy was asking: what kind of capital ship would be needed if a major war broke out in the Pacific?
From Design Board To Production
On the drawing boards, the New Mexico-class began as an argument about guns, armor, and cost as much as a set of blueprints. In the early 1910s, some voices inside the Navy pushed for a leap to sixteen inch main guns, while others argued that twelve improved fourteen inch guns, firing more often, gave a better chance of hitting at real battle ranges. In the end, the designers chose the refined fourteen inch fifty caliber weapon and focused their effort on making the turrets more efficient, the armor layout smarter, and the hull better behaved in rough water. One of the key ideas behind the class was standardization. At a glance, the New Mexico-class was a set of heavy, compact fighting ships. New Mexico and Mississippi led bombardment groups that hammered the Luzon beaches and inland defenses, keeping pace with the slow approach of landing craft while anti-aircraft batteries fought off diving attackers. When kamikazes broke through, they hit hard. New Mexico took a devastating strike on her bridge that killed her captain and dozens of men, yet her guns kept firing. Mississippi was also hit, her decks littered with wreckage and casualties even as damage control teams fought fires and flog. The class had found its fiercest trial not in a gunnery duel but as a shield for the invasion force under an air threat their designers had never imagined.
While New Mexico and Mississippi were in repair yards, Idaho went on to bombard Iwo Jima, trading heavy shellfire with shore batteries dug into volcanic rock in support of the Marines struggling ashore. All three ships reunited off Okinawa, where weeks of bombardment and near-constant kamikaze raids became the harshest test yet of their crews’ endurance. Once again kamikazes struck New Mexico and Mississippi, and Idaho suffered damage from near misses, but the ships stayed in the line, their big guns methodically breaking down defenses while their anti-aircraft crews fought to keep suicide aircraft away from transports and smaller escorts. By the time they steamed north to cover the occupation of Japan, the New Mexico-class had proved that even an older standard-type battleship could still shape campaigns when handled aggressively and backed by determined crews.
Strengths And Weaknesses
To the men who served on them, the New Mexico-class ships were first and foremost gun platforms that could be trusted. Crews respected the twelve fourteen inch guns for their accuracy and reliability, especially after elevation upgrades extended their effective range. The standard-type hull gave a steady base, and all-or-nothing armor meant that vital areas were wrapped in thick protection while less critical spaces were left lighter. The weaknesses were just as real. Designed for about twenty one knots, they could not keep up with fast carrier task forces, which limited them to bombardment groups and slower surface formations. Early in their careers, low-mounted casemate guns proved nearly useless in heavy seas, leading to flog and miserable conditions for crews until refits removed or relocated them. Even with enhanced anti-aircraft outfits, their armor schemes and internal layouts had not been designed with near-vertical dive bomb or suicide attacks in mind. Kamikaze strikes at Lingayen and Okinawa showed how vulnerable large, relatively slow battleships could be to determined pilots who aimed for bridges, fire-control positions, and exposed gun crews. On the engineering side, the turbo-electric drive in New Mexico was innovative but heavy and complicated, and later designs moved away from it.
Compared with later fast battleships and with enemy designs that traded armor for speed, the New Mexico-class looked conservative by 1944. They lacked the sprinting ability of North Carolina or Iowa, and their silhouettes still reflected an earlier generation of naval architecture. Yet in the roles they were actually asked to fill, their balance of firepower, protection, and endurance made sense. When there was a need for a ship that could sit off an enemy coast for days, soak up punishment, and keep throwing large shells inland, commanders were often happy to have a New Mexico-class on the gun line instead of a more modern, but less heavily armored, vessel.
Variants And Evolution
Within the class itself, “variants” took the form of successive rebuilds that turned the original World War I era silhouettes into something closer to the modern battleships familiar from late war photographs. In the early 1930s, the ships went through major modernizations that added a clipper bow, new tower superstructures, and improved conning and fire-control spaces. Casemate guns low in the hull were removed or plated over, replaced by higher-mounted secondary batteries that stayed workable in rough seas. Idaho received particularly heavy anti-aircraft upgrades, gaining ten quadruple Bofors mounts and large numbers of light guns, while New Mexico and Mississippi saw their radar suites steadily improved during wartime refits. These changes did not alter their basic role as standard-type battleships, but they transformed how they fought, shifting some of the class’s weight from pure surface gunnery toward layered air defense and night or bad weather capability.
After 1945, only one member of the class truly became a different kind of ship. Mississippi was retained and converted into a gunnery training and experimental weapons ship, her main battery altered and eventually reduced to make room for new guns and, later, missile launchers. Under a new designation she tested early surface to air missiles such as Terrier and evaluated new fire-control arrangements, serving as a bridge between the age of big gun battleships and the missile armed surface combatants that followed. New Mexico and Idaho, by contrast, went directly from occupation duty to decommissioning and scrapping, their wartime careers complete. In that sense, the class as a whole evolved from coal age dreadnought concepts to the edge of the missile era without ever shedding its fundamental identity as a heavy, slow, and steady battle line workhorse.
Legacy And Where To See It Today
No New Mexico-class hull survives, which can make their story feel more distant than that of some later battleships preserved as museum ships. All three served through the worst fighting of the Pacific War, then returned home to be decommissioned and scrapped in the late 1940s and 1950s, with Mississippi lingering longest in her missile and training roles.
